“Somehow it elevates my soul.”
That’s the feeling tango evokes for Daniel Oscar Arredondo, a multifaceted figure who has spent almost half of his life—26 of his 55 years—in the Queen City.
After earning a degree in Computer Science from the Universidad Nacional de San Luis in Argentina’s Andean region of Cuyo, Arredondo came to the United States in 1991 to pursue a master’s at UNC Charlotte. But his true doctorate—his PhD—has been in tango.
On December 15, 2001, he founded Passion for Tango, becoming the Supreme Pontiff of tangueros in the Queen City. The organization hosts Charlotte’s longest-running free Monday-night práctica and offers weekly classes for dancers of all levels alongside his partner, Talia Buitrago. The hundreds of tango enthusiast/dancers now in Charlotte likely began their tango journey directly with Arredondo—or with someone who trained with him at some point.
His impact has shone across the city, from studios to prácticas, elegant milongas, and festivals. Daniel has shaped the tango scene for more than two decades, including hosting events in his own home when the adventure began. Arredondo has taught workshops throughout the Southeast, collaborated with Blumenthal Arts and the Arts & Science Council, and performed at prestigious venues such as the Argentine Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Daniel is also a sought-after DJ, curating music that keeps dancers connected to the soul of tango. In 2024, he received the “Con A de Arte” Award from the Latin American Coalition for his contributions to Latin American arts in North Carolina.
From childhood memories of watching tangueros in San Rafael to his elegant milongas in Charlotte, Arredondo continues to elevate souls through dance—a Charloteano bridge between heritage, movement, and community.

Así describe Daniel Oscar Arredondo la sensación que le provoca el tango, un personaje multifacético que ha pasado casi la mitad de su vida—26 de sus 55 años—en la Ciudad Reina.
Tras graduarse en Ciencias de la Computación en la Universidad Nacional de San Luis, en la región andina del Cuyo, Arredondo llegó a Estados Unidos en 1991 para obtener su maestría en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Charlotte. Pero su verdadero doctorado—su PhD—lo ha alcanzado en el tango.
El 15 de diciembre de 2001 fundó Passion for Tango, para convertirse en el sumo pontífice de los tangueros en la Ciudad Reina. La organización alberga la práctica gratuita más longeva de Charlotte los lunes por la noche y ofrece clases semanales para bailarines de todos los niveles junto a su pareja, Talia Buitrago.
