Takes the famous words of Chavela Vargas with a southern twist—Daniel Valdez, a Charloteano since 1998.
Daniel Valdez, Chief External Affairs Officer at Welcoming America, has left more than just one mark along the streets of Uptown Charlotte. His initiative and activism for a more inclusive and unified Queen City have turned his commitment and passion into a lifelong profession.
Valdez’s ideals have led him to play an active role in organizations such as Charlotte Pride, where he served as president for over five years, becoming the first Latino to hold the position. To this day, he continues to support the organization as a board member, proudly representing the Latino LGBTQ+ community of Charlotte.
Throughout his extensive career, Valdez has served as Director of North Carolina and Mid-South region of the Hispanic Federation. He has been a member of the Governor of North Carolina’s Advisory Council on Latino Affairs, a founding member and president of Raíces, and serves on the board of the Latin American Coalition, the organization where his career first began.
His favorite pastime—aside from supporting local Latino businesses—is attending Charlotte FC matches, where he became part of the club’s history as the first ever “Charloteano” to be crowned.

Daniel Valdez, Jefe de relaciones externas de Welcoming America, ha dejado más que una huella por las calles de Uptown Charlotte. Su iniciativa y activismo por una comunidad integral e inclusiva en la Ciudad Reina, han convertido su compromiso y pasión en profesión.
Los ideales de Valdez lo han llevado a formar parte de organizaciones como Charlotte Pride en donde funcionó como presidente por más de 5 años, convirtiéndose en el primer latino en ocupar el puesto. Hasta el día de hoy sigue apoyando a la organización como integrante de la junta directiva, representando con orgullo a los latinos de la comunidad LGBTQ+ de la ciudad.
En su extensa carrera, Valdez ha sostenido el puesto de Director de la Federación Hispana en la región de Carolina del Norte y Medio Sur. Ha sido integrante del Consejo Asesor de Asuntos Latinos del Gobernador de Carolina del Norte Advisory Council on Latino, miembro fundador y presidente de Raíces, y es parte de la junta directiva de La Coalición Latinoamericana, lugar en donde inició su carrera.
Su pasatiempo favorito, además de apoyar el comercio latino local, es asistir a los partidos de la Charlotte FC, quien lo hizo parte de su historia, como el primer “Charloteano” en ser coronado.
